Welcome, Rosa! - Opening of the Belgrade office

The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung has opened a new regional office for Southeast Europe in Belgrade.

With two-day celebration and discussion in Belgrade, from 22nd to 23rd of September 2010, RLS has opened a new regional office. The main task of this office is the coordination of all future RLS projects in Southeast Europe. In that way, RLS wants to contribute to the strengthening of leftist organizations and social movements in the Balkans.

The office was officially opened on 22nd of September 2010, on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. At the party held in the new RLS office, in Dorćol, the ancient city area, more than a hundred guests crowded in the four rooms and two balconies. Young activists, critically oriented members of the academic community, union activists and feminists came to express their high expectations of this Foundation.

In addition to guests from Belgrade, head of the office, Boris Kanzleiter, welcomed the representatives of partner organizations from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Serbia, as well as a large delegation of RLS from Germany. RLS Belgrade staff was happy to see the representatives of various organizations and institutions from Germany that are also active in Southeast Europe. They were also glad to meet with the members of Committee on Cultural and Media Affairs of German Bundestag, which at that time was paying an official visit to Belgrade, apart from this event.

At the beginning of the ceremony, state secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, Snežana Lakićević, gave a short welcome speech in honor of RLS-Belgrade. After that, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Wolfram Maas, also welcomed the opening of a RLS office. President of the Foreign Affairs Council of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and President of the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence, Sonja Licht, pointed out the historical significance and a rich political legacy of Rosa Luxemburg. Director of RLS, Florian Weiss, stressed the importance of opening this office.
